Sophia Vitela

Emerging Leader

Sophia has demonstrated exceptional leadership and a commitment to environmental stewardship in her community in Wimberley. A passionate advocate since childhood, she launched an environmental club and podcast at her high school. For her capstone project as a Keep Texas Beautiful Young Texan Ambassador, she led the creation of a monarch garden at the Wimberley Village Library, transforming a neglected space into a vibrant, inclusive community hub. Through this project, she not only addressed a tangible environmental need, but also created a space for learning, healing, and connection. She brought together youth volunteers, longtime residents, and adult mentors like Keep Wimberley Beautiful and the Master Naturalists to build something lasting and meaningful. Her work is proof that youth-led environmental projects can be inclusive, impactful, and truly transformative.

Her leadership didn’t stop with one project. She also worked with Keep Wimberley Beautiful to pilot its first youth council, ensuring that other students have a voice and opportunity to contribute.

She continues to build on her impact as she started at University of Texas at Austin this fall, majoring in Climate Science. She serves as a role model to the next cohort of Young Texan Ambassadors, bringing her voice, ideas, and experience to the broader Texas environmental movement. Sophia demonstrates that real community impact doesn’t just come from bold ideas—it comes from hard work, collaboration, and a belief in the power of people.
