Grow Local South Texas
Organization
Grow Local South Texas connects children and families with nature through hands-on garden education. Their innovative Plant, Cook, Thrive: Youth Garden & Culinary Arts Program fosters health, sustainability, and environmental stewardship in underserved communities.
Their program transforms unused outdoor spaces into vibrant educational gardens where students not only grow food but also learn about soil health, environmental cycles, pollinators, and culinary skills. The program addresses food insecurity, obesity, and chronic illness in a food desert area of Corpus Christi. It merges environmental education, nutritional literacy, and family engagement, while prioritizing access for students with disabilities. The curriculum is bilingual and developmentally tailored, encouraging cross-sector collaboration between educators, local chefs, public health advocates, and university partners such as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Events like seasonal harvests, cooking demos, and family nights strengthen social-emotional learning and intergenerational knowledge sharing.
As a result, students try new fruits and vegetables, reduce screen time, increase outdoor activity, and develop lifelong habits of wellness and stewardship. The organization has put in 10,800 hours of environmental education service to over 240 students in the Coastal Bend region. Through coalition work, partnerships with TCiNN-aligned groups, and a commitment to equity and inclusion, Grow Local serves as a beacon of nature-based learning that supports the mission of healthier, happier, and smarter children across Texas.
