Cameron County Commissioner David A. Garza

Individual

Commissioner Garza's envisioned and supported the creation of the South Texas Ecotourism Center, a free museum and information center which educates visitors about the five major ecosystems native to South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley.

Starting in 2016, Commissioner Garza brought together a group of naturalists, exhibit designers, engineers and architects to discuss his vision for the center. He visited nature centers around the world for inspiration, incorporating storm water management, water conservation, and native landscape materials in his designs. His vision became a reality with his hard work and support from the Cameron County Judge and Commissioners.

The Center brings the community together by allowing families to gather and be inspired to be stewards of their environment. Working in collaboration with nature organizations, schools, cities, and universities, the Center hosts events, educational programs, tours, and camps for kids. Visitors learn about the importance of native plants, biodiversity, wildlife conservation, and preservation.

Commissioner Garza's support of the native plants and wildlife of south Texas and the Rio Grande Valley is inspirational. He has been an advocate for teaching the public about the importance of conservation and promoting free entrance to parks. His vision has inspired other commissioners to build nature centers in their districts and has expanded to a neighboring community with a center that educates the public about the Laguna Madre Bay and its native plant and wildlife.
