Using State Standards to Connect Formal & Informal Science
January 9, 2027 10am
Looking to bring hands-on, real-world applications to your formal environmental science lessons? Join Jill Zipperer, a Texas State University Biology PhD Candidate, former classroom teacher, and Board Member of the Informal Science Education Association of Texas, for this one hour webinar that focuses on bridging the gap between formal and informal science using standards. The session will center around the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, with brief discussions of NGSS and other types of standards. Using the Texas Natural Resource Environmental Literacy Plan as a guide, participants will learn about the importance of bridging the depth of formal education with the breadth of informal lessons. The webinar will include an in-depth explanation of how to break down standards, understand key terminology, differentiate between process skills and content standards, and identify possible correlations to hands-on environmental science lessons. Participants in this interactive workshop will leave with tangible ideas and takeaways for how to create new and build upon existing lessons in order to promote in-depth environmental science education experiences for K-12 students.
