Texas Paleontology

April 3, 2027 10am

Virtual Teacher Workshop with Dr. Thomas Adams at the Witte Museum.

Paleontology is the scientific study of ancient life through the study of fossils. For almost 200 years, Texas has been the focus of exploration and discovery in paleontology. Texas has a rich fossil record spanning nearly 500 million years, from ancient marine invertebrates to Ice Age mammals. Museums and universities from all over the US have been coming to Texas to collect these fossils. Today, new discoveries from mosasaur bones to dinosaur footprints are still being made in Texas and are part of ongoing research.

Dr. Thomas L. Adams is a Vertebrate paleontologist with over thirty years of experience collecting fossils in the field. He has conducted paleontological research across Alaska, Texas, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, Southern China and the Gobi Desert of Mongolia. He has authored and co-authored peer-reviewed scientific papers focused on a range of paleontological topics and taxa including Mesozoic marine reptiles, crocodyliform evolution and biodiversity, theropods, and dinosaur paleoichnology. He is currently the Chief Curator and Curator of paleontology at the Witte Museum in San Antonio, Texas.
